Pandiculation
A stretch-yawning
technique to aid breathing and promote calm
Overview
Pandiculation is a stretch-yawning technique thought to aid
breathing and promote calm and relaxation and ease stress.
How
does pandiculation work?
The patient is given a set of simple breathing exercises
with the aid of a small, stretchy ‘man’.
What
are the benefits of pandiculation?
Following
the technique as described encourages effective use of the diaphragm for calm,
effective breathing and is thought to ‘reset the nervous system’.
What
is the evidence?
There are some studies into pandiculation, which suggest
that the technique of yawning and stretching resets the nervous system to the waking state after a period of sleep and
prepares animals to respond to environmental stimuli.
Who
would this be good for?
All patients wishing to enhance their relaxation and
wellbeing.
Who
should be careful?
Pandiculation is a safe breathing technique for all to use.
